The A42 in Leicestershire has been closed while emergency services deal with a serious crash near Castle Donington. All traffic is being temporarily held in both directions from junction 14 at Tonge to the M1, according to traffic monitoring website, Inrix.

Leicestershire Police warned on social media at around 11.16am that the road was shut "due to a serious RTC". Drivers are being urged to find an alternative route while the incident is dealt with.

Google traffic maps indicate there are long queues of traffic forming on the carriageway. Details of the incident are not yet known.

Incident cleared

All lanes have now reopened on the A42 nothbound. National Highways has warned that long delays remain but they should start to ease now.

Driver extricated from lorry

A driver, who became trapped in the lorry, was rescued by crews from LFRS. The driver who has not been identified, was taken to hospital by East Midlands Ambulance Service (Emas).

The nature of their injuries is unknown. Leicestershire Police has been contacted for further information.

One lane reopens on northbound side

Lane one, of two, has reopened on the A42 northbound side. Lane two is still closed for recovery,

National Highways say there is still around three miles of congestion on the approach to the crash area which is causing delays of 45 minutes above normal journey times.

Southbound side reopened

The southbound carriageway reopened shortly before 1.20pm, Traffic was stopped so an air ambulance could land on the road. It has since left the scene.

Diversion in place

Drivers travelling northbound are advised to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs.

  • Exit the A42 northbound at J14 and turn left at the top of the slip road onto the A453 northbound.
  • Continue northbound along the A453 Moor Lane to the A453 Moor Lane/Walton Hill "T‟ junction.
  • At the junction, turn right and continue along the A453 to the A42/A453 Finger Farm Roundabout.
  • Take the first exit and rejoin the A453 either northbound or southbound to rejoin the M1.

National Highways is urging people to allow extra journey time or even to delay journeys if possible.

Long delays as road remains closed

The road is still closed in both directions with long delays.

The A42 is shut from Junction 13 to the M1 at Junction 23.

Highways update

National Highways Traffic Officers are on the scene assisting with traffic management.

"Traffic on the southbound carriageway is currently held at the request of the emergency services. Delays are currently in excess of 60 minutes above usual journey times on approach," National Highways said in an update.

Person trapped after car and lorry collide

A lorry and car have been involved in a crash on the A42 northbound (eastbound).

LFRS is devising a plan to free a person who has been trapped in their vehicle, according to a spokesperson.

Air ambulance lands on carriageway

An air ambulance has landed on the opposite side of the carriageway, a spokesperson for the fire service told LeicestershireLive.

The road remains closed.
